1 Vanderbilt settling in to becoming an integral part of the NYC skyline
Real or photoshopped? Believe it or not, it's real! While our location far from Lady Liberty throws many off, this famous photo is captured using a telephoto lens. The resulting effect is compression distortion. Learn more: bit.ly/3iNx3Hz 📷: joeprophoto/IG

Change happens slowly, then quickly
This all happened SO fast. Biden is signing the bill today to make Juneteenth a federal holiday. Don't think anyone expected this to happen even a few days ago.

Whatever you think about voting for DAs in the first place, it’s definitely a weird quirk of democracy that only Manhattanites are allowed to vote for Manhattan DA, which is one of the most powerful prosecutiorial roles in the country.

Rarely have I seen underbussing of this magnitude performed by a company on its former executives nytimes.com/2021/06/16/busin…

I do think there is one form of tactical voting that makes sense in this election. Let's say Yang is not in your top 5, but you *really* don't want Adams. Then it makes sense to put Yang at #5, to help him get elected if it comes down to one or the other.
I’ve seen people I respect and admire on this web site, including @s_m_i, make the claim that it can make tactical sense to exhaust your ballot in ranked-choice elections, rather than rank every candidate. I do not understand this claim and would love to see it spelled out more.

The need for tactical voting here comes not from ranked-choice voting but rather from the fact that everybody is forced to exhaust their ballot after just 5 votes, even if the list of candidates is much longer.

I watched this last night and also thought Stanford must be quite upset. But the real “In The Heights” backlash should be against that avuncular lawyer who's going to take every last cent of that kid's $96k as he pursues a green card even though he clearly has no pathway.
The real “In The Heights” backlash should be to how it perpetuates misinformation about financial aid policies at elite universities like Stanford in a way that deters low-income applicants who would in fact get a great deal despite sky-high headline tuition.
