My Southwest flight just got delayed by hours and yeah, I’m thinking ransomware.

Seems like three days of massive flight delays and total chaos is what you’d expect from a “minor connectivity issue” on Monday.

My major non-ransomware observation regarding air travel. Airlines had over a year of downtime to install USB chargers on planes, and they did not.

Livetweeting Southwest’s ransomware incident* here at BWI. * It is not yet officially a ransomware incident.

If anyone at Southwest needs technical advice about how to deal with this ransomware incident*, my advice is pay the damn ransom and get us in the sky. * There is no official confirmation any of this is caused by ransomware as opposed to just computers being the worst.

Just landed in Vegas and we’re stuck on the tarmac “because they’re having some kind of ransomware^H^H^H^H computer issue.”

Flight delayed another hour. It’s now 4 hours late and the boards are all reporting incorrect information. If you were planning to take Southwest anytime soon, don’t. The company’s systems are really screwed up and they’re basically covering it up.

Fortunately for everyone involved, these ciphers have been mostly deprecated. They’re only even included in some older phone basebands. But that’s not cause for celebration.

Because at the end of the day, all of the same incentives exist for governments to sabotage encryption standards. We like to pretend that they’re too enlightened to do this anymore, or that we’re smart enough to catch them. Maybe. I doubt it. 13/

In the late 2030s you should expect a team of researchers to be writing a paper just like this one, except it will be about the encryption you’re using today. //fin
