The hacked GabLeaks data also includes over 70k private messages from Gab users, including from Gab's CEO Andrew Torba. Here's great reporting on how he tried to get prominent anti-Semites to start using his site motherjones.com/politics/202…

Before the failed fascist insurrection on Jan 6, Gab had 1.6 million accounts. After the insurrection, AWS kicked Parler off its service, prompting a flood of 2.4 million exiled Parler users to flee to Gab

However, these numbers are misleading. The VAST MAJORITY of Gab's 4M accounts are inactive.
65% of them have never posted a single thing.
90% of them have never posted more than 10 times.
Only 2.5% (~100,000 accounts) of the accounts have posted 10 times since Dec 1, 2020.

After the insurrection the number of Gab groups (both private and public) getting created exploded too. But, what's the spike in private groups a few weeks _before_ the insurrection?

On the night of Dec 22 someone created 46 new private groups on Gab, one for each chapter of the far-right militia the Oath Keepers.
The groups don't have posts and most have only 1 member. They either weren't used or the posts were deleted after Jan 6 but before Gab was hacked.

I also searched the last 2 years of Gab posts for the frequency of different slurs. There was a big spike of anti-Black and homophobic slurs on a single date in February

As of late February, when Gab was hacked, this was the post with the most engagement on the whole site (also unlike on Twitter, the @realdonaldtrump on Gab is not, in fact, the real Donald Trump, but rather an account run by @getongab)

The Gab post that ranks ninth in engagement is from the major QAnon account with 220k followers.
Needless to say, his predictions did not come to pass.

GabLeaks includes 7,710 password hashes. Using the GPU on my gaming PC and a ~9000-word list of guesses (by combining a few short password lists from github.com/danielmiessler/Se… and one I made), my GPU crunched numbers for 3 days.
I cracked 88 passwords, 49 of which were unique

The 88 I cracked include:
- Trump2020 (3 different users)
- Trump2024
- trump2020
Plus plenty of typical weak passwords like:
- 123456
- asdf1234
- letmein
- password1
Also, as would be expected for Gab, the n-word.
